Alexandra United claimed the bragging rights of the Alexandra Township when they defeated local rivals Alexandra FC at the Alexandra Stadium this past weekend.
The 1-0 win in this Gauteng SAFA Second Division match was via the penalty spot from the boot of Mangani Sam.
There was major drama in this fixture before a ball had even been kicked. The match started an hour late after match officials failed to pitch up on time.
It was a sense of déjà vu for United who last weekend had their match against LMP Stars at home abandoned after the assistant referee failed to show up for that match.
The match was a typical derby affair with both sides having a go at each other in the opening stages, but failed conversion of chances meant that the match went into the interval deadlocked at 0-0.
The deadlock would be broken in the second half after United were awarded a penalty. Mangani stepped up and buried his attempt from 12-yards to give United the 1-0 lead over their rivals in a hotly contested affair.
That goal turned out to be the only goal of the match as United ran out 1-0 victors and added three more points to the bag.
John‘Shoes’ Mosheou’s men remain in fourth position with 52 points from 28 games, tied with third placed African All Stars who have played a game more.
On the other hand Alex FC remain mid-table dwellers in ninth position with 38 points, with 14 points separating these two fierce rivals on the log standings.
Next up for United is a league encounter at home to second placed Beyonce FC, this Friday night at the Alexandra Stadium.
Just five points separates these teams and a win for United will edge them closer to Beyonce.
