Alex fall agonizingly short of glory

Alexandra United fell agonizingly short of SAFA Second Division glory as they ended the 2013/2014 season a mere point off the top of the table.

Alex looked sure off the title and subsequent play-offs to go up a division to the National First Division. But a 2-0 loss on the penultimate day of the season against their closest rivals proved costly as they missed out on the league title by a single point.

Needing to win from their final two games to ensure top spot, Alex lost 2-0 to Highlands Park at home in their second to last game to consequently relinquish their place atop the table.

Alex subsequently needed to rely on Highlands Park losing their final game at home to African All Stars, but their prayers were not answered as Highlands cruised to a comfortable 2-0 win to clinch the SAFA Second Division Gauteng region crown and book their place in the play-offs.

Alex managed a 1-0 win away to LMP Stars, but the result was null and void as they ultimately came up just short after leading the pack for the better part of the season.

Alex will now partake in the newly formed ABC Motsepe League next season.
